Water is essential to life, yet the world is facing an unprecedented water crisis. With climate change intensifying, it's predicted that we could face a 40% water shortage by 2030. Addressing this critical issue requires a massive investment, estimated to be between $6.7 trillion by 2030 and a staggering $22.6 trillion by 2050.
In response to this pressing need, Candriam has launched the Candriam Sustainable Equity Water Fund, a cutting-edge solution aimed at combating the global water crisis. Classified as an SFDR Article 9 fund, this initiative is part of a broader effort to meet sustainable development goals through impactful investments.
Candriam's new fund is designed to address the increasing demand for robust water infrastructure and sustainable water management practices. It leverages a comprehensive strategy that includes thematic and ESG screening, alongside in-depth thematic analysis. This is bolstered by a bespoke water taxonomy developed through advanced data sources and artificial intelligence. The portfolio encompasses a wide range of investment opportunities, featuring both water solution enablers and leaders.
Johan Van der Biest, co-head of thematic global equity at Candriam, highlighted the significance of this initiative: “Water, indispensable for survival, is at the center of a growing global imperative. The launch of this fund provides sustainably conscious investors with an opportunity to be part of the solution to an intensifying global challenge. As the water crisis escalates, the market of solutions working to mitigate these challenges is growing in tandem – the global water market is expected to exceed $1.1 trillion by 2030. Investors also benefit from access to a growing market opportunity backed by our extensive experience in sustainable and thematic investing.”
The gravity of the situation is underscored by data from the US Geological Survey, indicating that only 1% of the Earth's water is readily available for human consumption. The need for immediate and effective action is clear. Senior fund managers Bastien Dublanc and David Czupryna, along with Candriam’s dedicated ESG team, are at the helm of this actively managed fund. They aim to deliver sustainable investment opportunities that can make a real difference. The fund is currently available for distribution in several European countries, including Luxembourg, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands, with plans to expand to the UK soon.
